Matthias Wierig

Matthias Wierig studied piano at the Cologne University of Music with Pi-hsien Chen and soon discovered his enthusiasm for art song. He continued his studies in Jürgen Glauß' class for Lied interpretation and in the master class of the famous American Lied accompanist Irwin Gage in Zurich. He was also taught in master classes by Graham Johnson. Numerous appearances have taken the young Lied pianist to renowned festivals and concert halls, including the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, Bad Kissinger Sommer, Styriarte Graz, Klavierfestival Ruhr, Freunde des Liedes Zürich and the chamber music series of the Komische Oper Berlin. In 2002, he was appointed one of the youngest professors at the Hochschule für Musik Saar in Saarbrücken, where he leads a class for Lied interpretation, as well as at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln/Wuppertal, from which his students have emerged as prize winners of national and international competitions on several occasions. He has assisted Rudolph Piernay, Anna Reynolds, Christa Ludwig, Brigitte Fassbaender and Marilyn Horne in their master classes and works closely with Barbara Schlick and mezzo-soprano Eva Vogel. Matthias Wierig has been a member of the jury at the national Jugend Musiziert competition several times and teaches lied interpretation in master classes alongside his university activities.
